Local Artist Tags Downtown in Signs

In the heart of our small business-centric Downtown Harrisonburg, the unique presence of hand-painted signs has emerged thanks to artist Jimmy Bruce of Age Old Sign Co. With a vibrant background in spray paint murals, Jimmy has transformed his passion for graffiti art into a thriving business that beautifies our community through custom-painted signs.

Over the past few years, Jimmy has left his mark on various local businesses, creating approximately a dozen distinctive signs that enhance the charm and character of our Downtown. From storefront windows to trucks, his artistry adds a personal touch that captures the essence of each business. Whether he’s designing original pieces or translating graphic design work onto surfaces, Jimmy’s meticulous attention to detail and creative flair shines through in every project.

After many years in the graffiti scene, Jimmy’s artistic journey took a turn when he began to focus on sign painting. With guidance from local artist Stan Shifflett ;  His approach not only showcases his skill but also reflects his deep-rooted appreciation for the small businesses that populate our Downtown.

Living in the Town of Elkton, Jimmy has also contributed his talent to local establishments by forging connections within the community that will last for years. His work extends beyond just signs; it’s about building relationships and enhancing the vibrancy of our shared space. Each time I see a new sign he creates—It feels to me as if it is a testament to the stories and dreams of the business owners he collaborates with.

Jimmy shares his commitment to fostering a sense of community alongside his wife, Nikki, who owns The Center Yoga. The Center is located in The Ice House Downtown. Together, the duo adds invaluable inspiration and creativity to our village.

As Downtown Harrisonburg area continues to evolve and adopt the 2040 plan; Jimmy Bruce remains a cornerstone of our artistic identity. We’re now home to so many beautiful signs and murals that it seems like any new business that joins us should ditch the vinyl and invest in hand-painted design by Jimmy…who isn’t just a sign- painter, but a vital part of our community fabric.

So next time you stroll through Downtown, take a moment to appreciate the signs that tell our story—crafted with care by Age Old Sign Co, home of Downtown’s beloved “Sign Guy.”

It appears to me that through his artistry, Jimmy is not just marking surfaces; he’s painting moments and memories that define our community.
